Summary of Last Words

In the previous episode, Lindsay Denton was kidnaped by the two corrupt police officers named DS Manish Prasad and Trotman's killer, DC Jeremy Cole. She is questioned and tortured by her abductors (Prasad and Cole) when she wakes up in a lock-up.

Prasad and Cole want to find out what Denton has told to the AC-12’s investigators, that’s why they torture her. But Denton only reveals that she had been set up by Dryden. Lindsay Denton outplays Prasad and manages to escape after Prasad kills Cole, his accomplice, for unknown reasons.

Denton plays smartly as she pins Prasad to the wall using a car and manages to force him to make a confession on the phone. Manish Prasad admits and expose that he and Cole had been working under Dryden who had set up the brutal ambush killing police officers.

Then she informs Steve Arnott on the phone and goes to her mother’s bedside after escaping. Arnott locates her and gives her some quiet time to spend there. On the other hand, Prasad is still alive and is demanding immunity but Denton is unaware of that as she thinks she had killed Prasad in her self-defense.

Meanwhile, AC-12 are forced to choose between Dryden and Denton, and make a decision regarding the case of ambush. Finally AC-12 arrest and investigate DCC Dryden after they discover he pictures showing that Dryden had sex with Carly Kirk which proved to be the final nail in the coffin.

However, DCC Dryden refuses to accept the blame and maintains that he has been set up, even after AC-12 present the evidence. He only admits that he had a romantic affair with Lindsay Denton but she became revengeful when he tried to end it. On the other hand, Cottan brings in DC Nigel Morton (the officer who released the Dryden’s driving offence to the papers) from his old team for some dirt on Dryden.

Review of Last Words

In this episode, there is more and more tension as there are more questions being asked than answered. The greatest strength of “Line of Duty” is the subtle way in which its writing makes us doubt every character in the show. This episode leads us to think, is anyone even telling the truth in this world which is filled with lies and betrayals. According to me, this episode brilliantly outlined that depending on different people’s point of view, a same story can be seen differently. All of this makes the characters of the show increasingly doubtful.
Watching “Line of Duty” gives me the same feeling as if I have been placed under the X-ray machine because there is a strange feeling that something extremely powerful is being directed at me. That explains how helpless we feel watching the show as we can do nothing but wonder about what is to come.

HIGHLIGHTS

Hello, again!

The reappearance of DC Nigel Morton in this episode is a treat to watch for the fans of season one. In this season, Morton has played a substantial role by releasing Dryden’s driving offence to the press. Nigel Morton was Cottan's former comrade in corruption. In this episode Morton agreed with Cottan to paint Cole (who is now dead) as “The Caddy”. Morton’s lies help Cottan to keep on going over his crooked path. We still have to discover how crooked his path really is, in this season.

Hmm...

I wonder if Dryden’s theory about Denton is true that Denton saw him with Kirk and killed her only because she felt betrayed. I am undecided.

about Lindsay

I experienced such an overwhelming feeling as I watched Lindsay Denton being water boarded and tortured, before turning the table on her abductor Prasad, crushing his legs with his own car and attempting to kill him after recording his confession on the phone. That really stuck in my head because I think innocent people do not tend to attempt murder as Lindsay Denton did with Prasad.

This makes me think that Denton as innocent as we’ve been misled to believe. Is she really a manipulative woman who is adept at hiding her true nature? Lindsay Denton’s character is quite shady as even after five episodes of this season I am still not sure whether Denton is only trying to clear her name or she is up to some bigger, dirtier game.

Who killed Carly?

This episode comes down to one major question that who killed Carly Kirk and for what reasons? Who is innocent and who is guilty, Dryden or Denton, because both of them cannot be telling the truth.

After this episode, the hardest task is to pin down all the possibilities. Any attempts to straighten the facts are confused by a lot of “whys”, “buts” and many question marks. We can only wait patiently for the last episode to finally find out who did what and why.
