What is Line of Duty?

The British crime drama thriller “Line of Duty” follows the work of AC-12, a special “Anti-corruption” unit charged with investigating corruption within the police force. The unit is led by Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), Detective Sergeant Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston).

There are many anti-corruption parts in police forces, that do things like AC-12, even though AC-12 does not exist these anti-corruption parts provide justice in the UK. The London Met’s version of AC-12 was originally called A10, but it was renamed to CIB1 (Complaints Investigation), and then CIB2 before settling on the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS).

AC-12 is a fictional anti-corruption unit, but the show “Line of Duty” tries to stay “as close to the right procedures as possible”, according to an interview by writer Jed Mercurio to The Radio Times.

AC-12 investigates and handles the situations within the police force itself. They try to find answers to the questions like, is someone tampering with the evidence? In the police force is there a horrible plan that leads to someone who is not guilty in jail?

3 MAIN CHARACTERS IN AC-12

In “Line of Duty” season 1, there are three main characters in the AC-12 unit. Let’s have a close look on each of the characters in detail.

Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott

Line of Duty follows Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott, a detective sergeant assigned to AC-12, the anti-corruption unit within Central Police. Previously, he served as a counter-terrorism officer. Because of a shooting of an innocent man by police, he moved to unit 12 for anti-corruption, so he did not have to deal with backlash. A serious go-getter, he often rubs his colleagues up the wrong way in his determination to solve a case.
Trustworthy rating: 4/5 - he’s a committed detective, but his ambition can cloud his vision.

Detective Inspector Kate Fleming

Kate is AC-12’s undercover specialist. She prides herself on being the consummate professional, unmoved by emotional considerations. Kate wants to prove herself as she wants to have a higher ranking and to obtain a promotion. Hastings, her “gaffer”, is someone she wants to prove herself to, because that is who will decide her future. Her ambition and determination shines through, as she seems to be comfortable and secure with her job as we see in the show.
Prior to the events of the first series, she was recruited into AC-12 by Superintendent Ted Hastings and was placed on undercover duty at Kingsgate Station to monitor DCI Anthony Gates.

Superintendent Ted Hastings

Edward 'Ted' Hastings is a Superintendent in Central Police, currently serving as the commanding officer of Anti-Corruption Unit 12. The first series shows that he will investigate DCI Tony Gates as their suspicion rises, as he will lead this investigation, he asks DC Arnott to contribute. He recruits him and DC Kate Fleming as part of AC-12. Hastings remains the ethically upstanding senior investigating officer. In the series, Superintendent Ted Hastings personally recruited Steve Arnott to AC-12. Zealous and suspicious, he's not everyone's cup of tea.

AC-12 suspects in each season

Who is AC-12 suspect in Season1?

The chief inspector was known as a suspect in season one. Anthony Gates was the chief inspector and this investigation was searching for gates being involved, as he had many suspicious links to a victim and suspects.

He led the serious crime unit TO-20 as gates had many supporters on his team, it was risky to suspect him. He had supporters from his three years as a excellent employee on the police force. His actions, combined with other successes from the TO-20 unit he heads, lead Gates to be awarded the Officer of the Year Award by Chief Constable Edward Thomas.

It is this that prompts Superintendent Ted Hastings to suspect his numbers are too good to be true and opens up an investigation into him regarding laddering.

Towards the end of the season 1, Gates, realizing his career is over, tells Arnott to inform his wife that he was killed in the line of duty, before committing suicide by walking in front of a lorry.

Who is AC-12 suspect in Season2?

DI Lindsay Denton is a Missing Persons detective of outstanding probity and the main suspect of AC-12 in season 2. As she would report workers for their misbehavior, makes people consider her as an outcast. Lindsay is called upon to aid the pressing transfer of a protected witness when she was on duty at 4th street station.

Lindsay is not used to dealing with critical occurrences as she spent large parts of her job in administrative positions. She is shocked and anguished when the police convoy is raided, and three colleagues are murdered. Upon returning to 4th Street Station, Denton is assaulted by Sergeant O'Neill and the rest of the staff, who blame her for the deaths of their colleagues. She is then called into AC-12 to be interviewed as a witness to recount the events of the ambush. She gets a life sentence even after trying to persuade AC-12 of her innocence.

In season 3, Lindsay gets an appeal but eventually she is shot dead by “The Caddy” after refusing to accept the bribe. Before dying she manages to inform AC-12 about Waldron’s list of child abusers.

Who is AC-12 suspect in Season3?

Sergeant Danny Waldron is a member of an armed response unit and is the new protagonist of the show as he is the subject of investigation in season 3. He is a very complex character. Apparently, Waldron is extremely motivated and ambitious. He is remarkable at what he does and, rules his squad strictly.

In episode one, he's put under investigation following the shooting of a suspect during an operation. There are many different layers to him, and he’s got a lot of issues that he’s dealing with. As the story unfolds, we realize the inner workings of his character and what is motivating him to do these dangerous and unpredictable things.

During a drugs raid with his squad, Waldron was shot in the neck and murdered by one of his squad members. Ultimately his death leads to the opening of an investigation concerning historic child sex abuse.

Who is AC-12 suspect in Season4?

“Roz” Huntley formally known as Roseanne, was his suspect. Her being a Detective Chief Inspector gave her an advantage to wrongly accuse others. He is suspicious of her in season 4 because she was the Senior Investigating Officer of operation trapdoor. Her ignoring evidence during the investigation, led AC-12 to investigate her further.

Despite Tim Ifield voicing forensic based concerns about the legitimacy of Farmers guilt, Huntley charges him anyway. Believing Huntley is framing Farmer, Ifield reports her conduct to AC-12 her conduct. At first, AC-12 had her on the ropes. With Superintendent Ted Hastings being fed information from the watching Fleming, he painstakingly picked apart Huntley’s Balaclava Man theories, the lack of evidence for Hana Reznikova, killing Tim Ifield and Huntley’s conflict of interest, with her husband now a suspect.

He pressed her over potential planting of evidence, all but accused her of murdering Ifield to silence him and recommended Huntley’s immediate suspension from duty.

Then she was imprisoned for 10 years for the manslaughter of Timothy "Tim" Ifield and Perverting the course of justice.

Who is AC-12 suspect in Season5?

In season 5, Detective Sergeant John Corbett is an undercover police officer who has been uncontactable for several months and the main suspect of AC-12 investigation. He is initially shown as John Clayton who is the leader of Organized Crime Group that captured a police convoy trying to transport seized drugs. AC-12 investigates the OCG with links to missing officer D.S. John Corbett.

John Corbett is the ruthlessly ambitious leader of an Organized Crime Group (OCG). His willingness to go to extreme lengths draws attention from the highest levels of the organization. He is the AC-12’s most dangerous villain. It turned out he’s working undercover on an operation so secret even AC-12 were kept in the dark.

When the OCG transport a group of women to their base to be trafficked, Corbett’s moral compass appears to kick in. He objects to the way the girls were being treated and tries to free the women. However, the OCG kill Corbett as they realize that he is the rat.
